Entry requirements
Applicants must have completed a UK-based PGDip psychological therapies programme, such as:
- PGDip Children, Young People and Families
- PGDip Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis and Bipolar Disorder
- PGDip High-Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- PGDip Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches
- PGDip Mental Health Practice in Education Settings
- PGDip Severe Mental Health Problems: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis and Bipolar Disorder
- PGDip Severe Mental Health Problems: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Personality Disorder
- PGDip Systemic Family Therapy
Course content
This programme has been developed to enable you to extend your PGDip into an MSc by undertaking a piece of empirical research, a service evaluation, a quality improvement project or a systematic review. The research thesis will allow you to follow your research interests in a topic related to your clinical area or a project related to service-based development. Supervision is provided by clinical researchers and/or psychological therapies/practice subject experts with provision available to support project supervision over Zoom or Teams to improve access to the programme.
The MSc will follow successful completion of a PGDip Psychological Therapies Practice programme available within Clinical Education, Development and Research (CEDAR) or nationally.

Applications must be received by 17 April 2023.
You must outline an idea for an original research or service evaluation project within your clinical area that has not been previously conducted (max 500 words). This need not be the project that you would undertake within the MSc; it is intended to demonstrate your ability to identify a research question and appropriate methodology. When evaluating this, we pay attention to your research question, whether the methods you have selected are appropriate and whether the project is feasible.
When applying, you must provide one reference and detailed academic transcripts.
The reference should be from an academic tutor or lecturer if you graduated within the past 2 years. If you graduated more than 2 years ago it is still preferable to submit an academic reference; however, a work reference is acceptable.

Teaching and research
In this programme you will be learning how to design, conduct, analyse and report a novel piece of applied clinical research. You will develop your skills and knowledge about research methods and project management through group seminars and regular individual tutorial sessions with your nominated supervisor(s). These sessions can be held over Zoom or Teams to avoid lengthy trips to Exeter.
In addition, you will be welcome to attend occasional research methods workshops and seminars at the University, or alternatively to view these remotely using our internet-based Exeter Learning Environment.
Careers
Successful completion of the Masters level programme may help you to make the case for promotion to more senior clinical roles in health and social care organisations. For example, evidencing advanced skills in clinical research is a component of Specialist Practitioner grades in the NHS Agenda for Change pay scale.
The Masters award is also an appropriate pre-requisite for application to our Professional Doctorate in Clinical Research Programme, to support your progression to senior applied clinical research positions.
