This specialist engineering programme will equip you with the skills required to be a modern mechanical engineer. It focuses on the latest techniques and technologies used in mechanical engineering, teaching you how to apply these to complex contemporary problems.

You will gain a range of computational skills which will enable you to analyse systems using numerical methods, simulation and optimisation techniques. Sustainability is also emphasised throughout the programme and you will be encouraged to consider responsible solutions to modern day challenges.

The programme is supported by internationally leading research projects in areas such as nano-scale materials engineering, biomedical engineering, 3D analysis from CT scans for prosthetic bone replacement surgery, additive layer manufacturing for high specification applications with aerospace metals, and application and recycling of polymers and composites.

The programme has been designed for mechanical engineers who want to progress their careers, and will enable graduates to proceed to Chartered Engineer status.

Programme structure 2017/18

This programme is modular and flexible, carrying 180 credits in total and offering flexibility in choice of modules studied.

MSc Mechanical Engineering consists of seven core engineering modules totalling 150 credits, which includes the 60-credit Engineering MSc project, and two 15-credit option modules.

The programme begins in September each year and the taught elements are concluded by May. The Engineering MSc project, under the personal supervision of a research expert in the chosen area, continues until September.

The modules we outline here provide examples of what you can expect to learn on this degree course based on recent academic teaching. The precise modules available to you in future years may vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand.

Structure

To complete an MSc 180 credits need to be completed, of which there are 8 x 15-credit taught modules and an additional 60-credit Project.

Each 15-credit module is delivered in an intensive 2-3 week block at the University of Exeter. This allows part-time students in full-time employment to complete their programme in short, concentrated blocks.

Modules are taught once per year, and precise dates of each module will be made available. It is not possible to delay modules and due to the intensive programme, students must attend all sessions.

All modules will be taught to both full and part-time students.

Pricing

Pricing for the part-time programmes will be scaled with the full time MSc.

4-year programme = ¼ full-time price per year

2-year programme = ½ full-time price per year

Teaching and assessment

The programme is delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, industrial presentations, case studies, industry visits, computer simulations, project work and a dissertation.

The programme will have particular value in developing transferable skills development including management skills, communication skills, computational techniques, data handling and analysis, problem solving, decision making and research methodology. Many of these skills will be addressed within an industrial and commercial context.

You will be allocated a Personal Tutor who is available for advice and support throughout your studies, along with support and mentoring from graduates who are now placed in industry. There is also a Postgraduate Tutor available to help with further guidance and advice.

A research- and practice-led culture

You will discuss the very latest ideas, research discoveries and new technologies in seminars and in the field and you will become actively involved in a research project yourself. All our academic staff are active in internationally-recognised scientific research across a wide range of topics. You will also be taught by leading industry practitioners.

There is considerable demand in the workplace for graduates with knowledge in both a specialist technology area and in management, particularly in the modern tools and techniques to support the management of a dynamically changing engineering business.

Recent graduates have taken employment in a variety of sectors, including both large companies and small and medium sized enterprises.

Professional accreditation

This degree has been accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council for the purposes of meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) undergraduate first degree. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

It should be noted that candidates completing the MSc who hold an underpinning accredited IEng degree or a non-accredited bachelor degree will need to apply for an academic assessment with the relevant engineering institution to determine whether they will meet the educational base for CEng registration.’

A good honours degree from a recognised university. We do consider all applications where there is evidence of exceptional performance in modules relevant to the programme of study, significant relevant work experience or professional qualifications

Overall score 6.5. No less than 6.0 in any section.

TOEFL IBT*

Overall score 90 with minimum scores of 21 for writing, 21 for listening, 22 for reading and 23 for speaking.

Pearson Test of English (Academic)

58 with no less than 55 in all communicative skills.

Cambridge English: Advanced & Proficiency

Overall score 176. No less than 169 in any section.

Pre-sessional English
