Our MA Applied Security Strategy (MStrat) aims to meet the needs of current and future strategic practitioners and anyone who wishes to understand strategy in action. This interdisciplinary programme is designed to develop confident, critical thinkers with the potential to lead on the development and execution of policy and strategy in an uncertain, culturally-diverse and resource-constrained world.

The programme, which takes a sharp, highly-relevant and practitioner-targeted focus, employs simulations and fieldtrips alongside lectures, seminars and conferences with leading academics and practitioners to create and train experts in the fusion of strategic communications and intelligence to craft policy and strategy in the contemporary security arena.

  • Educating and developing future leaders and decision makers
  • Team taught by SSI academics, led by Professor Patrick Porter and Lieutenant General (Retd) Sir Paul Newton KBE, it will involve leading academics from across the University and senior practitioners from the private sector, intelligence community, the military, NGOs, international organisations and across government
  • Innovative teaching includes crisis management simulations with practitioners and at NATO Allied Rapid Reaction Corps HQ
  • Fieldtrips to the Balkans and Brussels to view strategic security issues at first hand
  • Full fee and other scholarships available for professional, academic, UK/EU and international students
  • Exposure to Whitehall and participation in joint conferences with the Royal United Services Institute
  • Excellent networking and mentor and peer support
  • Also available as a part-time option

The MStrat develops the professional judgement of future decision-makers through a dialogue of theory and practice. We examine the practical problems of pursuing security in an uncertain world, preparing students to make theoretically-informed choices under pressure.
