LEAF & LabCup Project Assistant

Overview

Half of my role includes promoting lab sustainability and supporting the University of Exeter's technical spaces with their efforts to reduce the environmental impact of their research and teaching via the Laboratory Efficiency Action Framework (LEAF). The other half of my role is to provide admin and user support for the University's chosen lab management software (LabCup), and to support my line manager with any other ongoing projects within Tech Services, such as the Technician's Commitment Working Group and the Quality Assurance Working Group.

Originally from Shrewsbury in Shropshire, I studied BSc Conservation Biology at UWE Bristol. My broad interests include ecology, conservation, evolution and environmental change, with a particular interest in anthropological effects on the marine environment.

My introduction to the University of Exeter was at one of the yearly Bio-Blitzes held at Penryn Campus. Following this, I managed to secure a 6-month Research Assistant position at the campus's Centre for Ecology and Conservation. It was here that I realised my vocation for laboratory work; this role allowed me to get in the lab, learn new skills and find that lab work suits my ability to concentrate on precise tasks requiring manual dexterity and attention to detail. I worked a variety of temporary administrative roles at both Cornwall campuses of the University after my initial Research Assistant position and then jumped at the chance to apply when I spotted that the role of ESI Laboratory Technician had become available. I worked as the ESI's lab tech from 2017 to 2022 and then secured my current role after a 6 month secondment working on LEAF & LabCup.
