Case study: Economic Challenge Investment Fund (ECIF)

The University has been awarded nearly £500K from HEFCE to help both businesses and individuals during the recession. The funds will not only be used to create a package of support for businesses in the region, but also to help create opportunities for graduates and students during these difficult times.

This grant was applied for by, and successfully awarded to, RKT in order to encourage the engagement of businesses with the University. The economic impact of this project could potentially be very wide helping knowledge based businesses to grow and develop through the engagement with the University as well as enabling academics research to impact in industry. Not only does the grant allow for students & graduates to be placed within companies and for organisations to benefit from Leadership and Mangement training at the business school, the grant provides us with the funds for academics to work on small R&D projects with businesses. In total 20 £5,000 R&D Vouchers are to be awarded to pay for academic time and direct costs associated. So far, these projects have been hugely successful allowing many businesses to benefit from this engagement and in some cases has encouraged further collaboration with local companies with the development of larger bids.

There are two main funding priorities in England which translate into six regional priorities. Three of these are specific to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly who benefit from ESF funding under convergence.
