Acknowledging funders

Most funders now require researchers to include in any publication acknowledgement of the support received from the funder in question. The Research Information Network created guidance on the acknowledgement of funders in journal articles.

It is recommended that:

  • The funding agency name is written in full.
  • The grant number is in square brackets.
  • Multiple grant numbers are separated by a comma and a space.
  • Funding agencies are separated by a semi-colon, with 'and' before the name of the final funder.

For example:

This work was supported by the Medical Research Council [grant number xxx].

This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust [grant number]; Cancer Research UK [grant number]; another funder [grant number] and another funder [grant number].

A statement about how the underlying research data can be accessed (where applicable) should be included.
