Research is at the heart of everything we do including our teaching and work with business and the community. As a research-led university, we are committed to the development and transfer of knowledge and the creation of an educational environment that encourages the scholars and scientists of the future to excel.
The University of Exeter offers challenging and exciting opportunities together with a supportive environment in which to pursue research at the cutting edge of your area of interest.
The University offers three types of postgraduate research degrees across a broad range of subject areas:
- Masters by Research (MA or MSc);
- Master of Philosophy (MPhil);
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
These are in addition to more specific research degrees such as the MD (Doctor of Medicine) and EdD in Education.
For a detailed directory of all our specialist areas of research, see our Directory of research activity.
Postgraduate funding opportunities
Our partnerships with Universities such as Bristol, Bath and Edinburgh as part of AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC and ESRC funded Doctoral Training Centres, place us at the forefront of world class research in science, technology, the humanities and social sciences.
We offer numerous PhD studentships annually across a wide range of subject areas, enabling many students to study for PhD with their fees paid and a maintenance grant provided. Studentships are usually available during the Winter and Spring months and we recommend visiting our funding database to identify current awards available.
Further potential funding sources are outlined on our Funding for PhD students pages.
