An ongoing relationship between the University of Exeter and Theta Technologies developed after company founder Dr Peter Armitage developed new ways of testing materials for early signs of degradation during his PhD at the University.
Dr Armitage, now Technical Director at Theta Technologies, completed a PhD on Ultrasonics at the University which lead to the development of the new technology which uses non-linear acoustics as a form of ultrasonic testing and gives earlier warning of material degradation such as micro-cracking or delamination.
The company, established in 2008, is based at the Innovation Centre on the University’s Streatham campus.
Managing Director Iain Fairbairn said the University setting has provided a number of positives including academic support, use of research facilities such as X-Ray CT scanning and a ‘fresh animated environment where new ideas come naturally’.
