Role
Andy leads the Research Development Team. They are responsible for:
- Supporting the development of applications for research funding.
- Managing relationships with key funding bodies.
- Supporting the development and implementation of key strategies.
- Supporting College business plans and research strategies.
- Gathering information on instituional research activity and strengths.
Andrew also acts as secretary to the Research and Knowledge Transfer Strategy Board chaired by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Nick Talbot and leads on supporting the University’s Science Strategy. In this role he also directly supports the Science Strategy Themes for Systems Biology and Translational Medicine, Personalised Healthcare and Public Health.
Profile
Andrew joined the University in 2004 with both academic and commercial research experience.
He attained a PhD in Anti-Cancer Drug Targeting at the University of Bath in 1992 and then held a post-doctoral position in the Department of Surgery at Cambridge University. This research group formed a spin-out biotechnology company which was subsequently acquired by a major pharmaceutical company. During this period he led a research group and also gained significant commercial experience.
Subsequent positions included working within the contract and proposals team of a global clinical contract research organisation. During this period he also successfully studied for an MBA.
