Role
Jim is Research and Knowledge Transfer (RKT) Manager responsible for managing two teams working on EU funded projects:
- The delivery team focusing on business facing activities for the European Regional Development Fund-funded Environment and Sustainability Institute, and,
- the programme management team on the European Social Fund-funded Higher Skills Research Programme.
He is responsible for providing RKT support to the University’s academic community working on research projects related to energy (particularly renewable energy) and provides assistance in developing large, multi-institutional or interdisciplinary grants.
He acted as a project manager for the £14M Peninsula Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy and in 2009 coordinated the University’s input into Higher Education Funding Council for England’s pilot exercise managing impact within the Research Excellence Framework.
Profile
Jim has a first degree in Economics and Geography (1984) and a Master’s degree in Business Administration (2000) and has been at the University since December 2008.
He spent 10 years in the oil and gas sector working for a research agency as Technology Transfer Manager before setting up and running a European University association in marine technology designed to encourage collaboration between universities, exploit EU research opportunities, and work alongside major European shipbuilding and shipping interests.
More recently, he spent eight years working in another south west higher education institute where he was responsible for knowledge transfer within their marine portfolio. His interests include marine renewable energy, marine technology, and business development.
