Policy, Impact, and Performance Manager
Role
There are three main components to Michael's role.
Research Excellence Framework (REF)
Michael is responsible for ensuring that the University is well prepared for the REF, and that we have good intelligence and systems to manage the process and ensure the University is in the best possible position ahead of the census date in 2013. He is responsible for managing the annual Research Monitoring process and related preparations for the REF.
Impact
Michael is responsible for developing an Institutional understanding and capability in Impact.
Impact links academic research to those who benefit from it in user communities:
- Government,
- industry,
- policy makers, and,
- cultural sector agencies, etc.
And is becoming a cornerstone of world class research.
Performance
Part of the wider activities of the Policy, Impact and Performance team include strategic data analysis and the close monitoring of performance indicators. Drawing on a variety of information sources and databases, the team takes responsibility for the monitoring and forecasting of the Institution’s research performance.
Profile
Michael Wykes joined the University of Exeter in 2004 following a research council funded D.Phil. at the University of Oxford, where he also studied at undergraduate and master’s levels. His D.Phil. investigated the ethical aspects of Intellectual Property Rights with reference to global access to Essential Medicines, and he has acted as an external PhD examiner in this field. In between his academic studies, Michael has also worked for the pharmaceutical industry and in public sector headhunting.
