Heat and health researchAdvantages of contract research
- Research Excellence Framework (REF): Contract research can be included in the REF in terms of research income and impact.
- Success rates: the success rate for industry funded applications is significantly higher than other sources. In 2008/09 the success rate for the University of Exeter was 84% compared to 17% on average for Research Councils.
- QR funding: contract research generates additional business-related QR HEFCE funding.
- Flexible scope: contract research can provide researchers with more flexibility as the project scope can be tailored and lead times to funding can be reduced.
- Building relationships: contract research strengthens the potential for future research collaboration as many sponsors new to the University will go on to collaborate in other research projects or fund students.

Example
An academic was been approached by a company interested in a pilot study. Following initial discussions with RKT Contract Research, the project was fully scoped and a FEC costing was prepared for this piece of research.
RKT assisted on the draft proposal providing information and documents that were requested as part of the quoting process. The project was awarded to UoE and the next stage of contract negotiation was managed by RKT. The funding from the project covered the cost of a research assistant enabling the University to bring extra expertise to the project. The success of this small pilot study lead to a subsequent successful application to a Research Council enabling both the University and the client to benefit in the longer term.
