Professor Tim Clutton-Brock: The 2008 Darwin Lecture at the University of Cornwall Campus

Tim Clutton-Brock is the Prince Philip Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. His research has investigated the evolution of reproductive strategies, breeding systems and societies, the operation of natural and sexual selection and the regulation of animal populations. He has worked primarily with mammals and has initiated a number of well-known, long-term studies that have been able to follow large samples of individuals throughout their lifespans, including studies of red deer (on Rum), Soay sheep (on St Kilda) and meerkats (in the Kalahari). His studies of red deer have featured in recent Autumnwatch and Springwatch programmes while the meerkat study provides the basis for the popular Meerkat Manor series.

Paul Jackson

Paul Jackson took up his post as ITV’s Director of Entertainment and Comedy in February 2006 after working as Granada’s Chief Executive Officer in America. Before that, Paul worked in Australia as Chief Executive Officer of Granada Productions and spent a period back in the UK as Director of International Production and Entertainment. He has a distinguished record as a programme producer. His hits include the BBC’s cult sci-fi sit-com Red Dwarf, 3 Of A Kind (BAFTA & MONTREUX ROSE WINNER), The Young Ones (BAFTA WINNER), Girls on Top for Central, Don’t Miss Wax and Saturday Live for Channel 4. He also co-produced an Oscar-winning success in 1988 with the comedy live action short The Appointments of Dennis Jennings, which starred American comedian Steven Wright and Rowan Atkinson. In 2004 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by his old University in Exeter. He is also a Visiting Professor in the School of English at Exeter. He broadcasts regularly on Radio Four with his series In Conversation With, which ran for five years and he now fronts Britain In A Box, which is about to commence production of its fourth series. Paul will be speaking on "Some Things That Have Made Me Laugh".

James Smith
Monday 23rd March, Peter Chalk Newman A
James Smith is Chairman of Shell UK. He has been with Shell since 1983, working in all the group's major businesses. Recently he was Head of Executive Resourcing, which principally involved ensuring there is a highly talented and diverse group of leaders for the top 200 jobs in Shell. Until the end of 2003 he was on the global board of Shell Chemicals as Head of Technology, Strategy and Sustainable Development. Prior to that, much of his career was in upstream oil and gas production, latterly in business development. James will be speaking on "Building the Energy Future"

Sir Leszek Borysiewicz

Sir Leszek Borysiewicz is Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council. Sir Leszek was knighted in the 2001 New Year’s Honours List for his research into developing vaccines, including a vaccine to prevent the development of cervical cancer. As a physician, Sir Leszek specialises in viral immunology, infectious diseases, cell mediated immunity, virus associated malignancy and vaccine development. He is the author of reports for the World Health Organization, the MRC and the Department of Health, and was Chair of the Department of Health / Medical Research Council TSE Research Advisory Group that reviewed research and coordinated the human health research strategy on Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Sir Leszek will be speaking on "Shaping the Future of Biodmedical Research"
