Mr Tom Henderson OBE, CEO and founder of ShelterBox

(videolink to the University of Exeter Cornwall Campus, Lecture Theatre TBA)

Tom Henderson OBE, a Rotarian and ex-UK Royal Navy Search and Rescue diver, spotted a gap in aid provision for disasters. In 1999, he developed the idea of the ‘ShelterBox,’ with which he aimed to provide emergency shelter in the form of tents and other lifesaving supplies in an easily transportable box. After gaining the support of his local Rotary Club in Cornwall UK, then Rotary Clubs worldwide, ShelterBox was formally launched in April 2000 and the first boxes of aid were distributed in January 2001 to an earthquake disaster in Gujarat – India.

Since its launch in 2000, ShelterBox has distributed over 200,000 tents on over 180 deployments to more than 75 different countries, helping well over a million people in need.

Tom’s ethos of doing ‘the most for the most’ underpins all aspects of ShelterBox operations, in partnership with a ‘can do’ approach, which has enabled the charity to achieve so much in just twelve years. His personal story is one of inspiration, dedication and one man’s determination to make a difference, but most of all it’s a tale of what can be achieved when one trusts in hope.

Tom Henderson OBE will be speaking on “Shaping the Future: “Disaster Relief – The way ahead”

An overview of recent past Humanitarian disasters focusing on the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the current Disaster Relief efforts worldwide, and the way ahead.

This is the last lecture for this academic year.
