Changes to KPIs and Top 10 Comparator Group

A piece of work has recently been carried out by the Strategic Planning Team to update the Key Performance Indicators and the Top 10 Comparator Group.

Key changes to the KPIs are that the University will be no longer be looking at the proportion of earned income (i.e. the proportion of income that we get from sources other than the state) but rather a measure of earnings using EBITDA calculation (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation).

The proposal to change the Top 10 Comparator Group involved dropping Birmingham, King’s and Nottingham, as our recent performances have widened the gap on these institutions and they no longer represent a stretching or aspirational benchmark for us.  To this end, the new group includes University College London, and gives us a group of exactly 10 institutions which we can benchmark ourselves against on the 10 KPIs.  The new group is as follows:

  • Bath
  • Bristol
  • Durham
  • Edinburgh
  • Lancaster
  • Loughborough
  • St Andrews
  • Warwick
  • York
  • UCL

This work, which was recently approved by Council, links into the University’s strategy and overall mission.
