Information for staff

Latest News from Professor Steve Thornton
(Dean for Joint Medical Students and Dean of The University of Exeter Medical School)

14/01/2013 I am delighted to invite you to attend the upcoming Athena SWAN Celebration where we will be joined by Professor Teresa Rees of Cardiff University. Prof Rees' research focuses on Woman and Science Policy and Gender Mainstreaming and she will be discussing the importance of Athena SWAN and gender equality in the sciences. The event is a celebration of the work undertaken so far; having joined the charter in 2011, the University was awarded Bronze status in March 2012 and are currently working towards Athena SWAN department awards.
So will this Celebration be all about women? No, good practice benefits all staff and students. However bad practice adversely affects women’s careers more than men’s. The best departments don’t target measures specifically at women, but develop processes that are fair, flexible, accessible and transparent to all.

Venue
: Alumni Auditorium, Streatham Campus (Please note a coach will be running from Tremough and Truro for colleagues in Cornwall who would like to join us). Alternatively the event will be available via video conference at the following locations – Tremough, Exchange Lecture Theatre and Truro, Room F083, Knowledge Spa: limited capacity)
Date: 30 January 2013 Time: 1-3pm

Prof Rees' talk will be followed by a question and answer session with Teresa and a number of leading STEM/M academics. You're then invited to join us for refreshments, networking and an opportunity to share your views and suggestions in the Forum.
Please RSVP to (c.hewlett@ex.ac.uk ) including confirmation as to whether you require transport to Streatham campus.
09/01/2013 I am pleased to announce the appointment of Louise Vennells to the position of UEMS Communications Manager. Her role will include internal communications, press relations and stakeholder liaison. Louise is currently working in the University of Exeter press office, where she is responsible for science communication. Prior to working with the University, Louise spent ten years as a regional journalist, and covered health stories as part of her remit as an Exeter-based news reporter.

Louise will officially start her new role on February 4, but is keen to make contact with staff and to hear of any potential media or internal communications opportunities in the meantime. She can be contacted on l.vennells@exeter.ac.uk
03/01/2013 The next locality meetings, which are open to all staff, will be held in Truro on 7 March 2013 in room GO73 at noon, and in Exeter on 8 March in Lecture Theatre G18 at 13.00 on the University of Exeter, St Lukes Campus; so please put the date in your diary.
On both occasions lunch will be provided, so to help with the catering, please let Janis.smith@exeter.ac.uk (Exeter) or L.Buckland@exeter.ac.uk (Truro) know if you will be attending.

As you know, I would welcome your thoughts on how things are going, ahead of the meeting, and please let me know if there are areas that you particularly wish me and the executive team to mention at the locality meetings: s.thornton@exeter.ac.uk
