Guidance on job titles

The following guidance has been drafted in order to ensure a degree of parity across Colleges and Services for similar roles and similar grades.  Job titles should be simple and meaningful to both role holders and managers.  If you are creating a new role or renaming an existing role, please consult your HR Business Partner before any changes are effected.

Where possible, the University’s HR database will record job titles in a generic format – giving the job level first followed by any description – to allow greater comparison. For example:

Manager (Catering) instead of Catering Manager
Supervisor (Estate Patrol) Estate Patrol Supervisor
Personnel Officer (Policy) Personnel Policy Officer
Technician (Animals) Animal Technician
Senior Assistant (Admissions) Senior Admissions Assistant

The following guidance on indicative job titles provides Colleges and Services with a suggestion of appropriate job titles to be used at each grade. In each case, Colleges and Services should seek advice from their HR Business Partner. Some job titles appear at more than one grade.

For roles at this level, the job title 'Officer' should be used rather than 'Assistant'
