In November 2009, the University of Exeter’s Council approved a proposal to move from nine Schools to five Colleges as from 1st August 2010:

A Change Management group was set up to support the full-time Change Manager and Change Management Work Streams were established. The Change Manager was appointed to manage the Change Programme, oversee the transition from nine Schools to five Colleges and develop a revised organisational structure would deliver:
- Greater working together between disciplines and across Colleges
- Financial sustainability
- Development of postgraduate study
- Greater research grant income
- Wider and deeper internationalisation
- Improved graduate employability
College structures are now in place and common action teams have been set up to take forward some of the work started by the Change Management Work Streams.
