Mike Wetherell

Senior Health and Safety Advisor (Scientific and Technical)

Mike joined the central safety team in 2014 to help the university further develop organisational wide safety systems in scientific and technical areas following his success in CLES as the Biological Safety Officer. Mike comes with both chemical and biological experience and is leading the on safety standards covering, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CoSHH), Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), Bottled Science Gas and Cryogenics, Carriage of Dangerous Goods, Diving and is involved in the University wide Safe Laboratory Project. Mike is the main university contact for CLES and UEMS and for any scientific or technical safety query.

Brian Robertson

Health, Safety and Radiation Protection Officer

Brian joined the safety team in 2014, is a qualified Radiation Protection Adviser, Radioactive Waste Adviser and Laser Safety Officer. Brian is the main contact for ionising and non-ionising radiation safety; compliance with the ionising radiations regulations, environmental permitting regulations, control of artificial optical radiation at work regulations and other applicable legislation.

Rhian Loosemore

Health & Safety Advisor

Rhian joined the team in November 2013. As a safety generalist Rhian's role is to develop organisational wide safety systems for the general safety subjects such the incident reporting & investigation standard, events and fieldwork. One of Rhian’s expert subjects is ergonomics and is the point of contact for musculoskeletal issues relating to Display Screen Equipment (DSE) and manual handling. She works closely with the Occupational Health team and Disability and Wellbeing Advisor to provide additional support to staff as required. In addition to her financial sector experience Rhian has also worked in the NHS and brings much experience around managing lone working, UK and international travel.

Rhian is the main contact for Cornwall (including the Holman Test Mine & the Knowledge Spa in Truro), Business School, SSIS and Professional Services as well as being a contact for anyone needing general health & safety advice or support.

Sylvia Dell

Safety Systems Administrator

Sylvia is team lead for incident reporting database, radiation database, eye test reimbursement process, first aider database, fire marshals database, and is the initial contact for data requests and reports.

Karen Gallagher

Environment and Sustainability Adviser

Karen has been with the University of Exeter for seven years and joined the safety team in August 2015.  Karen is a Chartered Environmentalist and the strategic lead for environmental sustainability at the University.  She works in an advisory capacity to further embed environmental sustainability and ensure continual environmental improvement across the institution.

Ian Stone

Health and Safety Advisor

Ian joined the team in September 2015 and has experience from a variety of backgrounds including local authority, insurance and further education. Ian is a chartered member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) and is the main contact for Campus Services and HUMS related Health and Safety queries. Ian is leading on health and safety training programmes, audit processes and specifically on the following safety topics on Local Exhaust Ventilation , Lifting equipment (LOLER), Work Equipment (PUWER) as well as being a contact for anyone needing general advice or support.

Fire safety team

John Howkins

Fire Safety Manager

John has a Fire Service background and is our competent person for fire matters.  He joined the team in 2013 and is currently working on an improvement plan to develop all aspects of fire safety within the organisation. On a daily basis John assists managers and staff with specific fire related queries and is also the lead for the Fire Risk Assessment Project.

Robin (Bob) Sturtivant

Having retired from uniformed service after 33 years Bob joined the team in 2013 and leads on the development and delivery of Fire training.  Bob is also a key member of the Fire Risk Assessment Project team

Ian Heywood

Fire Safety Risk Assessor

Ian has joined the team to assist in the Fire Risk Assessment Project. Ian is responsible for carrying out Fire Risk Assessments in all buildings across the University and working with managers to resolve any issues.
