Assessing students with disabilities

Since the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA) of 2001, and subsequent amendment of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) of 1995, all Further and Higher Education institutions in the UK must ensure that learning opportunities and assessments are accessible for students with disabilities and injuries, where appropriate.

Arrangements may include additional time allowance in examinations, alternative examination location, use of amanuensis, computers and specific software, including lip speakers and screen readers. Face-to-face support may also be provided.

All staff should receive awareness training on the DDA and its practical implications, and can view details of and reserve places on the Learning and Development website. These sessions are provided by colleagues in AccessAbility Pathway.
