Diversity in assessment

Short answer writing tasks

Short answer questions are easy to write and relatively easy to mark. They can be useful to gauge students' understanding of a broad spectrum of course content, and are often popular with students who struggle with more extended forms of writing.

However, they are not always appropriate for assessing students' critical engagement with the subject, and are less commonly used at more advanced levels.
