Academic honesty and plagiarism
Turnitin - more information
Turnitin is a web-based electronic detection software product, first developed in the United States and now extensively used in UK universities.
It is designed for two purposes:
- to allow tutors to recognise when students are plagiarising
- to enable students to better understand plagiarism in the context of their own work
Both students and tutors can submit assignments to Turnitin. The product will then identify the original source of material included within any piece of work. The system achieves this by searching a database of several billion pages of reference material gathered from professional publications, student essay websites and other student works.
