Academic Professional Programme

The Academic Professional Programme is a level 7 (Master-level) course about developing your academic practice. Participants on the programme would normally already have completed a doctorate, and would usually have teaching experience in the HE sector. In addition, the programme is aligned with Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE) through the ASPIRE Framework and so participants must be in a role at Exeter which includes substantive teaching responsibilities (indicatively at least 100 hours of teaching and supporting learners for the duration of the programme).

The programme is available as a continuing professional development (CPD) opportunity to all staff at the University of Exeter for whom Academic Practice (teaching and scholarship/research) is a key part of their role. If you are not sure if this applies to you, and you wish to discuss programme eligibility, please contact the Academic Professional Programme team regarding your specific circumstances.

Following the Exeter Academic probation criteria, participation and successful completion of the programme is mandatory for new Lecturers (E&R) and new Lecturers (E&S), on contracts greater than 0.8FTE. There is also a part-time pathway version of the programme for colleagues on part-time or fixed-term contracts (<0.8 FTE and/or <24 months).

If you are asked to take the programme as part of your probation and would like to discuss exemption, you should discuss this with your Academic Lead, HR Business Partner and/or Head of Department in the first instance. Further information about programme exemption and accreditation of prior learning can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section of these web pages. You should then contact the Academic Professional Programme team.

Please note that all participants taking the standard version of the programme will have an initial needs assessment (INA) undertaken as part of the programme enrollment process, and so the programme team may recommend a full or partial accreditation of prior learning which would effect the amount of the programme you would have left to complete. Any of the INA recommendations can be discussed with your Programme Lecturer by emailing the Academic Professional Programme team.
