The Aspirational Managers Programme
This programme is aimed at improving the skills and capabilities of staff who aspire to take on management roles for the first time. The programme lasts for 12 months and features a curriculum of management development and work-based experience including project-type work, chairing meetings and giving presentations.
The programme is run once a year beginning in April.
What is the Aspirational Managers Programme (AMP)?
The programme has been developed to help prepare suitable successors to existing managers within Professional Services and to offer development for staff who wish to progress their careers within or beyond the University.
In summary the programme:
-
Offers a structured approach to developing and improving management skills for professional development, succession planning and career development.
-
Is aimed at staff wanting to work towards adopting a people management role.
-
Complements internal management development programmes aimed at those already with responsibility for others.
-
Provides a pathway through a range of internal programmes and includes a variety of other activities and opportunities.
You will spend around 10% of your time at work on learning and development which is based on a curriculum, mapped over a 12 month period. During this period you have access to support by a mentor, along with your Line Manager, to build a range of skills and experience in selected areas that are important for staff with responsibility for others.
Unique to this programme, you have the chance to develop in real, challenging work situations and through a work-based project. Your development and progress is recorded in a AMP CPD log & reflective journal which is monitored throughout the 12 months. Successful completion of the programme gives you a nationally recognised qualification in leadership and management (the Level 2 Award in Leadership and Team Skills) and you will receive a Certificate of Completion at a celebration event.
What will I have to do as part of the AMP?
The Curriculum
The Aspirational Managers Programme is based around a 12 month curriculum of scheduled development including the essential foundation programme (Team Leading) and workshops on selected topics . In between the scheduled development you will also be expected to select other appropriate activities and carry out tasks to further your own development as planned in their PDP.
The AMP Curriculum covers all the mandatory workshops and courses for the completion of the programme.
Throughout the programme there are workshops timetabled. The precise content of each session is flexible to allow for the changing needs of the candidate cohort but will include sessions on:
-
Meeting management
-
Project planning
-
Presentation skills
-
Reviewing staff
The AMP calendar
Once you are enrolled on the programme you will receive a calendar with the dates and times of the workshops you are expected to attend as part of the curriculum as well as some further courses that are recommended.
What impact will this have on my existing learning plans?
Learning and development activities already planned that are essential for you to conduct your normal duties will need to be taken into account. Any conflicts can be discussed with the Programme Co-ordinator, Clive Betts.
Is there any cost?
The only cost is for the registration fee for the ILM Team Leading qualification you must undertake as part of the programme. You can find information on the ILM registration fees on our ILM website.
