Our leadership and management development framework

Introduction

We have structured the development opportunities we offer our managers using the leadership and management framework which describes what managers are expected to be able to do and understand.

The ILM framework is divided into five levels of responsibility, understanding and experience and can be mapped approximately onto the University’s management job grades, although there are substantial overlaps, as might be expected.

Level Indicative Grade Job Title Development Opportunities  Qualification
Team Leader C-D Supervisor, Team Leader (New/aspiring to management; 1-3 years experience) Team Leading course Award in Team Leading
First Line Manager D-E Team Leader, First Line Manager (3-5 years experience) First Line Management course Award in First Line Management or Certificate in First Line Management
Middle Manager E-F Section Head, Manager, Operations Manager (2-3 years experience of operational management) Management Essentials course Award in Management
Senior Manager F-G Section Head, Manager, Operations Manager, Assistant Director, Assistant College Manager (3-5 years experience of operational management) Management Essentials course Award in Management and Certificate in Management (under development)
Strategic Manager G-H+ Director, Assistant Director, College Manager, Head of Department (5-10 years of experience with some strategic management or leadership) Currently under development Award in Strategic/Executive Leadership/Management (under development)

Each level has a description of what someone with responsibility to supervise, support or manage should be able to do and is based on the results of research into role profiles of service managers in UK HE; these are represented in the leadership and management framework table along with the relevant qualifications we can offer through our ILM Centre.

Relationship of Management standards to Competencies and University Values

The competencies are a set of behaviours which underpin what is expected of Managers, in effect describing how managers can meet the expectations of the management standards.  A number of competencies will be required at the same time to meet any one of the statements and will vary according to the context.

The University values can be regarded as the foundation of the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours expected of all staff in the University.

ILM credit and qualifications

The development opportunities listed under each level state whether the learning they deliver is associated with a qualification or credit towards a qualification.  You don't have to register to do a qualification to do the learning but if you want to get credit towards a qualification you will need to tell us before you attend.

Please note that there is a small fee for each qualification which is payable at the time of registration.

If you have attended one of our courses, workshops or programmes that has an ILM credit or qualification linked to it then you may be still able to get a qualification by just doing the assessments. For more details please contact ilmcentre@exeter.ac.uk

Definition of managers and grades

The qualifications are associated with a level of management and with grades as applied here at the University of Exeter. These are purely for guidance and are approximate only. If you are unsure of the right level for you and your job please contact ilmcentre@exeter.ac.uk

Senior management development

There are a number of courses designed to equip potential, current and new members of College or Service management teams with the analytical tools and information needed to carry out their roles:

We are working towards an ILM accredited programme at this level being available from autumn 2012.
