ILM qualifications

Team leaders and first line managers are the lifeblood of any successful organisation, directly responsible for staff on the frontline.  By efficiently managing those who deal with customers, provide a service and process the money that keep a business going, they hold the key to organisational performance.

You are able to take 4 ILM qualifications through Staff Learning and Development. 

The qualifications below are associated with a level of management and with grades as applied here at the University of Exeter. These are purely for guidance and are approximate only. If you are unsure of the right level for you and your job please contact ILMCentre@exeter.ac.uk

Level 2 Award in Leadership and Team Skills

The Level 2 Award in Leadership and Team Skills is specially designed to give practising or aspiring team leaders a solid foundation in your formal development as a leader.

You may be a first time manager or team leader (indicative grades C-D).

The Award in Leadership and Team Skills is a concise qualification designed to give you a basic knowledge of the various roles, functions and responsibilities of a team leader and the limits of your authority and accountability. The core units are a good starting point for team leaders who are new to your role or for aspiring leaders who wish to gain a solid understanding of the principles and practicalities of leading a team.

Level 3 Award in Leadership and Management

The Level 3 Award in Leadership and Management has been specially designed to give practising or aspiring first line managers a solid foundation in your formal development as a manager. 

You may be an existing team leader/section head with 3-5 years experience (indicative grades E-F).

The Award in Leadership and Management is a concise qualification which gives an introduction to the basic skills, knowledge, and understanding required by today’s first line manager.  The core units are designed to develop practical techniques for tackling managerial problems and decisions from gathering and interpreting information through to the effective communication of outcomes.

Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management

The Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management has been specially designed to give practising or aspiring first line managers a solid foundation in your formal development as a manager.

You may be an existing team leader/section head with 3-5 years experience (indicative grades E-F).

The Certificate in Leadership and Management builds and broadens the skills and knowledge gained in the Award (above).  You will explore organisational change along with the crucial skill of time management.  Additional core units cover business communication, creativity and innovation for the workplace as well as information gathering and analysis, and managing customer service.

Level 4 Award in Leadership and Management

The Level 4 Award in Leadership and Management is designed to give practising or aspiring middle managers a solid foundation for your formal development as a manager. 

You may be a middle or progressive manager (indicative grades F-G).

The Award in Leadership and Management is a concise qualification made up of 3 core units covering the core research, analysis and groupworking skills essential to practising or potential middle managers.

Level 4 Certificate in Leadership and Mangement

The Level 4 Certificate in Leadership and Management aims to give experienced middle managers the foundation for progression to more senior management roles. The qualification does this by exploring the middle manager role and structuring more in depth analysis and interpretation of the organisation’s culture and aims.

The Level 4 Certificate is made up of 4 core units.
