Academic Performance and Development Review
Purpose of the Performance and Development Review
The Performance and Development Review (PDR) is a regular review of performance and development dealing with the whole spectrum of academic activities. In particular, it is the forum to agree and assess personal goals related to research and education.
The PDR is concerned with enabling academic staff to perform at the highest level so that the University can help to facilitate the generation of world-class scholarship and 4* publications, alongside excellent research-led teaching which enhances the student experience at the University of Exeter.
The process is also about ensuring that an appropriate level of support is provided when necessary.
How?
The PDR discussion is expected to be undertaken in the context of University and College Strategies as well as your personal career goals
The review is carried out with an Academic Lead; and together you will agree personal goals, monitor progress and agree future actions related to
- Research and Scholarship
- Impact
- Education
- Internationalisation
- Other significant contributions to the University
The discussion will focus on actions which will enable you to achieve personal goals and contribute to discipline and College priorities.
The stages of PDR process
The conversation with your Academic Lead is at the heart of the process; the paperwork serves as a record of the meeting. You may find the following checklist helpful:
- Your Academic Lead will contact you to arrange a meeting in March/April each year.
- Prepare your PDR portfolio; in particular complete the review of your major achievements and progress against agreed actions in the review period
- Pass the portfolio to your Academic Lead one week before the meeting.
- Ensure that the outcomes of the discussion are recorded and that you and your Academic Lead have signed the PDR Summary Sheets.
- Copies of the PDR Summary Sheets should be passed to the Dean.
Also, remember to formally record that the two supplementary meetings have taken place.
