St Luke's Campus, ExeterLeading research staff
The University wishes to ensure that all research staff are integrated into the University and are treated equally to other staff. With this in mind, this page highlights some useful links to information that leaders of research staff may find helpful in their role leading research staff and for their own development.
University Processes
All staff including research staff are expected to engage with the University processes: Induction, the Performance and Development Review, for those staff on fixed term contracts and an exit review process for staff who leave. Anyone called to sit on a recruitment & selection panel is expected to complete the mandatory recruitment training - please see the Learning and Development website courses for further details
Academic Role Profiles
The University provides information for staff in academic roles including role profiles for Teaching and Research Job Family and Research Job Family. These links also cover information on the Professional Development Programme for Lecturers as well as information about the Research Career Pathways. Guidance for progression may also be of interest.
Funding applications & development of research staff
Most applications for funding require information on the development opportunities available to research staff. Whilst they have access to provision identified under learning and development at the University, there are also development opportunities for research staff under the researcher development programme.
Development of Principal Investigators
There is an online resource provided by vitae, a national organisation focussed on developing and supporting those involved with research. The content includes expectations of the Principal Investigator (PI) role, research environment, impact, people management and more. This is a free resource accessible via Leadership development for PIs
In addition there are useful publications from Vitae which contain lots of information and advice and you are encouraged to take a look at the following: The leading researcher: explore and develop your leadership potential -Practcal guide and introduction to leadership with useful theories and exercises to help you explore your leadership potential. Other publications may be of interest too around creativity, public engagement and strategies for managing workloads and are available from the Vitae web page.
Marketing of Events/Seminars
You may wish to promote School based events/seminars to others at the University. Please send information to the events office for inclusion on the webpages via Margaret House-Hayes.
