Generic skills

The core training programmes fall into the following categories:

  • Mandatory training
  • Health & safety
  • Basic lab skills
  • Information technology
  • Equipment
  • Research
  • Teaching
  • Personal and professional
  • Management

The specific courses suggested for these generic skills are outlined in the training resource matrix for you to use to personalise for each technician, varying according to their role.

The aims and learning outcomes of each course is given on the learning and development website and within Trent HR Self Service.

Online courses have their aims and objectives in the introductions.

Specialist skills

In addition to the core generic training, you will require your technicians to work up a set of specific skills to learn for each agreed technical role.  You can use the training resource matrix to identify and include which specific courses are required for each technician. You can do this by referring to skills identified by your College/Service to assist academics and students, and is informed by the graded job description, person specification, Technicians Competency Framework and Part B of the PDR form. Thus, you will identify what additional courses you require to meet each technician’s development needs.  Training can include a mixture of on-the-job training; off-the-job training; online learning; action-learning and networking.

Much of the training given will be on the job by an experienced technician or from external providers. HEaTED has a range of tools/courses. Professional support for the technicians can also be found through the HEaTED forum (log in via the HEaTED website).
