Academic Lead role description

The University regards high quality academic leadership and management to be crucial to the success of the Colleges and the University. Through the role of Academic Lead, the academic community will participate in the management and leadership of the College and University endeavour.

The Academic Lead will play a pivotal role in:sustaining a shared sense of direction for their discipline and a shared participation in the University and Colleges’ success through engagement with University and College strategiesensuring decisions are taken forward effectively by all staff they leadenabling, supporting and celebrating individual achievement

The Academic Lead will be accountable to the College Dean for ensuring appropriate management and leadership processes are followed.

Responsibilities:

  • participate in the College level decision-making processes through representation on the College Management Group
  • promote staff engagement with and participation in College, discipline or subject group discussions and decision-making
  • lead, motivate and develop a group of academic staffencourage research collaboration and effective networking
  • provide guidance, mentoring and coaching to the group of staff
  • recognise individual contribution and provide feedback on performance, specifically any feedback from research (including ROM for research active staff), teaching and management duties as part of the Professional Development Programme (PDP) and Performance and Development Review (PDR) process the Academic Lead will undertake for the group of staff
  • jointly agree goals at induction, PDP and PDR which reflect College, discipline or subject group and individual aspirations and regularly review these goals
  • inform promotion and merit award discussions
  • pay attention to work-life balance by informing workload discussions
  • promote equality and diversity
  • promote an environment in which all individuals are treated with dignity and respect and where harassment and bullying are unacceptable
  • act quickly to establish structured support where performance is a concern and ensure the College Dean is informed

Support

Academic Leads will be supported in their roles by the College Executive Group. Support, training and ongoing development will also be provided by Human Resources. Further support around personnel related policies, procedures and systems will be provided by the HR Business Partner and the College Manager.
