Protocols for using the title Associate Professor

Many congratulations on your new title.  The University has developed some protocols for the use of the title Associate Professor:

  • Associate Professors are entitled to be addressed as “Professor (name)” and to refer to themselves as such in normal discourse, although the title Associate Professor should be used on letterheads, business cards etc.

  • Associate Professors should be listed as “Associate Professor” in College and University publications (including webpages), where job titles are used.

  • Associate Professors are not full Professors of the University and consequently are not members of the Professoriate (eg where Statutes and Ordinances specify that being a Professor is a requirement for holding an office).

  • Associate Professors may be given an academic title (eg “Associate Professor in (specialised research area)”. For staff promoted through the research route, this will reflect their specialised area of research; for staff promoted through the management and entrepreneurial route, this will reflect their general area of academic activity.
