Procedures for promotion to Associate Professor and Personal Chair

Promotion to Associate Professor

  1. The criteria for promotion to Associate Professor are outlined below.
  2. If you wish to be considered for promotion to Associate Professor you should, in the first instance, discuss their proposed application with your College Dean to determine whether their application has College support. (Personal submissions may be made where the College does not support the application.)
  3. Applications must be made on form PD05, accompanied by a full academic CV, indicating whether their application is being made on the grounds of excellence in research or academic management and entrepreneurship.
  4. All applications, including personal submissions, should be forwarded to the College Dean, who will complete the "Statement by College Dean" section and forward the completed application to the Director of Human Resources.
  5. Human Resources will notify the applicant of the arrangements for interview. The purpose of the interview is to establish whether there is a prima facie assessment of the suitability of candidates for promotion to Associate Professor. If VCEG agree that there is prima facie case, then arrangements will be made for (a) external assessment, where the application is on the grounds of research excellence; or (b) a further interview (with a panel chaired by the DVC Resources and also comprising the Registrar and Secretary, a Senior Lay Member of Council, the DVC Education and a College Dean), where the application is on the grounds of academic management and entrepreneurship.

Criteria for promotion to Associate Professor

1. The University will apply the following criteria in considering applications for promotion to the grade of Associate Professor.

Demonstrating, through sustained performance over a number of years, contribution and value to the College beyond that expected of a Senior (grade G) appointment in the originating job family, in the following areas:

(a) Be a leading authority in the subject with an international reputation, as evidenced by research publications and (inter alia):

  • research income
  • research supervision
  • other esteem indicators
  • significant contribution to the development and clarification of research strategy for the College and subject area
  • mentoring and developing other researchers in the College

and/or

(b) significant management, leadership and entrepreneurship, as evidenced by the following:

  • leadership and management of a unit or a significant area of activity within the University.
  • management of significant income-generating programmes and/or leadership of collaborative partnerships.
  • significant contribution to the leadership and management of the design and development of the overall curricula.
  • significant contribution to the leadership and management of the development of teaching and learning strategies and academic standards for the College and subject area.
  • significant contribution to the development and clarification of, teaching or other important strategy for the College and subject area.
  • mentoring and developing other researchers and/or teachers in the College

2. The University has issued protocols on the use of the title Associate Professor by staff in this grade.

3. Applications for promotion to Associate Professor may be made by a College or by personal submission.

Promotion to Personal Chair

  1. The criteria for promotion to Personal Chair are "outstanding distinction in their subject and who carry a substantial masure of academic responsibility".
  2. If you wish to be considered for promotion to Personal Chair you should, in the first instance, discuss their proposed application with your College Dean to determine whether their application has College support. (Personal submissions may be made where the College does not support the application.)
  3. Applications must be made on form PD08, giving details of past achievements and future academic plans. The completed form, together with a full academic CV should be sent to the Director of Human Resources.
  4. Human Resources will notify the applicant of the arrangements for interview. The purpose of the interview is to establish whether there is a prima facie assessment of the suitability of candidates for promotion to Personal Chair. If VCEG agree that there is prima facie case, then arrangements will be made for external assessment.

Promotions will be announced as soon as the recommendation has been confirmed by VCEG, with promotion taking place with immediate effect. A list of all those promoted will be prepared for Senate and Council.
