Equipment

Homeworking should operate on the principle that no duplication of equipment (computer, printer, telephone, desk, chair etc) is provided by the University. The University is under no obligation to provide equipment to homeworkers.

Exceptionally, in certain circumstances, the University may provide a laptop, mobile telephone or VOIP telephone. Where IT equipment is supplied by the University, it must be used in line with the University’s Regulations for using computing facilities.

Additionally, under HMRC regulations and University Regulations, equipment provided by the University for business use at home should be used primarily for work-related purposes. Some limited (HMRC regulations use the term ‘insignificant’) personal use is permitted but this should not interfere with University business.

Portable appliance testing

Electrical equipment provided by the University should be subject to periodic Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) at the same time as equipment based in the University is tested. Homeworkers will need to bring their laptop (and any other electrical equipment provided) into the University for PAT testing.

Insurance

Equipment provided for homeworkers is not currently insured by the University and the University may require the employee to contribute towards the cost of any replacement or repair where, in the judgement of the University, this is caused by the employee’s neglect. Homeworkers should take particular care when transferring a laptop between their home and the University.
