Claims: Rates of pay

Inidividuals engaged on a claims basis will normally be paid the appropriate hourly rate as set out below:

Claims rates for teaching

For teachers and demonstrators paid on a claims basis in the 2012/13 academic year, the revised hourly rates shown below should be applied.

Pay-by-claim rates in the University are based on the JNCHES payspine but as JNCHES has not yet agreed rates effective from August 2012, these rates are based on the August 2011 rates. As in previous years, any increase agreed mid-year by JNCHES will not be applied by the University to individuals paid on a claims basis.

Campus Services - Casual claim rates

With effect from 1 October 2012:

Age category 2012/2013 rates
18 - 20 years  £6.25 per hour
21 years and over  £6.94 per hour
Supervisors  £7.20 per hour

The above hourly rates are inclusive of the pro-rata statutory entitlement to 28 days paid annual leave and bank holidays, (ie 12.07%) as payment in advance of the period of leave. The holiday year is 1 January to 31 December and casuals need to ensure that they take all their leave within the holiday year outside peak times in the area where they normally work and at times mutually agreed with their Manager.

The 12.07% holiday percentage is calculated as follows:

 Full time Holiday
Days x
Weeks  52
= Total  260  28
Full time days -  260
Holiday  28
= Work days  232
Holiday (divided)  28
Work days  232
= Holiday Percentage  12.07%

All new casual workers must complete a PD81 starter form.
