Immigration categories
There are three main categories of immigration that allow an individual to take up substantive employment in the UK and one category that allows an individual to conduct research:
Tier 2 (general)
This visa gives an individual the right to work solely at the institution and in the post to which they are appointed.
Following successful completion of the recruitment requirements for this category, the University will issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) (this replaced work permits) to the individual. The College/Service must pay the cost of the CoS, currently £170.
The individual must then obtain a visa against the CoS. An individual in this category cannot start work until a CoS is issued and they have an appropriate visa.
The CoS will either match the length of the contract, or can be issued up to a maximum of 3 years (whichever timeframe is less). This can be extended for up to a further 2 years, at which time the individual should apply for settlement if eligible.
Tier 1 (highly skilled migrant)
This is a visa that the individual would obtain on their own volition. They allow the holder to work anywhere in the UK until the expiry date indicated on the visa.
Tier 1 (highly skilled migrant) visas can be issued up to a maximum of 2 years, with a possible extension of up to a further 3 years, at which time the individual should apply for settlement if eligible.
Tier 1 (post-study worker)
This visa allows the holder to work anywhere in the UK until the expiry date indicated on the visa.
Tier 1 (post-study worker) visas can be issued up to a maximum of 2 years, at which time they must either switch to another immigration category or leave the UK.
Tier 5 (government authorised exchange)
This visa gives an Honorary or external researcher the right to conduct research in conjunction with the University.
Following the successful College application for making an Honorary appointment, the University will issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) to the individual. The College must pay the cost of the CoS, currently £10.
The individual must then obtain a visa against the CoS. An individual in this category cannot start work until a CoS is issued and they have an appropriate visa.
