EDI Vision

We have been on a journey of reflection on our culture and how we take our equality, diversity and inclusivity commitments further. This has been informed by our key initiatives like the Provost Commission, our Speak Out Guardians, Values, Widening Participation plans and what we have heard from our staff and student community. We have worked hard over the period of our last strategy and know that we can be sector leading. We already have a foundation of recognised-good practice in some areas reflected in our Institutional Athena Swan Silver Award, and new sector-leading policies on parental leave. We want to build on this foundation.

To take us on the next step in this journey we believe we need a new vision for ED&I to guide our development over the next five years. Vision 2025 will enable the University of Exeter not only to be compliant with its legal duties under the Equality Act 2010 and institution wide commitments, but also support a positive inclusive culture and national best practice.  The Vision supports the goals as set out in our Sovereign Strategies; Education, Research and Impact and Global to 2025

The proposed Vision 2025 serves a number of functions:

  1. A route of progression from compliance through to cultural change then ending in cultural competency (the destination)
  2. Demonstrates a need to return to the basics and fundamentals and build on these to ensure cultural competence.
  3. Indicates progress already made and work still to be explored
  4. Covers a whole-institution approach to EDI and Governance structure to enable the same.

A key aspect of this process is consultation with staff and students. To effectively meet the needs of the diverse groups of people at the University it is important that we liaise with staff and students from different backgrounds who have experience of what the issues may be for people who identify with the protected characteristics*.
