Equality Impact Assessments

The University is committed to promoting equality and diversity and has a legal obligation to complete Equality Impact Assessments. The Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) process is a systematic review of all the University’s policies and procedures within all Colleges and Services. Impact assessing highlights areas of equality and diversity best practice and enables us to pre-empt and discourage incidents of discrimination. As a result of the EIA process we are able to actively promote equality of opportunity, meet the University's specific legal requirements regarding equality and maintain the excellent work, study and research environment here at Exeter.

Conducting Equality Impact Assessments

Equality Impact Assessments ensure that equality considerations are built into everything we do at the University, they promote equality of opportunity and a fair working environment. We ask all Services and Colleges to give substantial consideration to completing EIAs to ensure that we meet the needs of all staff and students. The best place to begin is looking at the EIA paperwork or contacting the Equality and Diversity Team.

Consultation Groups

A key role within the Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) process is that of the consultation group.  To effectively meet the needs of the diverse groups of people at the University it is essential that we liaise with staff and students from different backgrounds who have experience of what the issues may be for people who identify with the protected characteristics*.

* Protected characteristics as identified by the Equality Act 2010 are age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
