Val Phillips

Val is the Manager of the Family Centre on the Streatham Campus and has been for over 40 years. In 2002 she received an MBE at Buckingham Palace for ‘Services to Higher Education’, recognising the contribution her work makes to enabling students and staff to achieve their academic goals.
She has developed a centre which was rated Ofsted Outstanding across all areas in 2009. The support she has given to so many children and their carers over the years is truly inspirational.

Val hopes that International Women’s Day will help bring us closer to real equality in all parts of the world. She also recognises and takes great pride in the knowledge that the work she does helps to enable women to achieve their full potential and reach their goals.

When asked for her proudest moment Val says: “It’s quite difficult to single out one moment particularly when working with children as these moments occur throughout the day. I still feel really proud when I see one of the very young children help another or show care and concern if they look sad. After over 40 years working here I still feel it’s a privilege to have some influence on a child’s development.”

Val has a wealth of experience and her advice is very much about not taking life too seriously, as she explains: “It’s ok to make mistakes: the person who never made a mistake, never made anything. Learn from them, but remember life is not a rehearsal....enjoy each day.”

For Val it really is the children she works with who bring her joy every single day, she says: “I love their spontaneous remarks, the questions they ask, their observations and delight when they discover something new.”
