Disability and Covid

COVID-19 has changied the way people work and is impacting on working environments and arrangements. Occupational Health and the Staff Disability Advisor can assist with advice information and signposting.

Information about COVID and how it impacts on specific conditions can be found via the NHS or specialist websites that deal with those conditions. Some individuals with disabilities or impairments will be more clinically vulnerable and should follow the guidance they have been given by the clinical team.

The Access to Work scheme has been extended to those disabled people working from home or in the workplace so they can benefit from extra help. There are three key measures:

  1. Grant funding available if disabled staff need support to work from home because of COVID-19, which can help pay for special equipment such as a screen reader or video remote interpreting or support worker services.
  2. If disabled people have to  travelling into work and public transport isn’t a safe option for health reasons, they can also apply for financial support with transportation costs including taxi fares
  3. If people are anxious about returning to work and need additional support, they can also get mental health support through Access to Work with a tailored package of support for up to nine months

Applications are fast tracked if they’re in the clinically vulnerable group (fast-tracked if they are in the clinically extremely vulnerable group)
