About the University Family Centre

The University of Exeter provides a purpose-built Family Centre which stands in its own grounds on the Streatham Campus.

University staff, students and parents from the community may use the Centre. We cater for children from six weeks to five years of age.

The Family Centre provides an environment in which the individual needs of children and parents are respected and supported and where a high standard of care and education go hand in hand. We aim to provide a happy, safe, secure and stimulating environment, in which each child can develop physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually at their own rate.

Children can come for a minimum of two days a week for a minimum of one term. The same sessions must be booked each week. Full-time and full-day children are catered for and a cooked mid-day meal is provided during the morning session. Tea is provided during the afternoon.

Children have the opportunity to play with a wide range of materials, toys, educational equipment and climbing apparatus. Special sessions of cooking, music and movement, gardening, ICT, dance and drama are also enjoyed, particularly by the older children. Outside play is part of every session and the children benefit from walks around our outstanding campus.

Children are divided, according to age, into small groups, each having its own staff, toileting area and playground. This makes for safe, secure units where good relationships are fostered between the children, parents and staff and where the children are known individually.

We accept the Government Early Years Entitlement for funded three and four year-olds.

Nursery food

The menus have been developed, under advice from local authority nutritionists, to ensure they provide a healthy balanced diet suitable for developing children. Menus are displayed on the parent noticeboard.

Children are encouraged to bring a piece of fruit each day to share with their friends at snack times. As well as encouraging healthy eating it is a way of helping  to develop valuable personal and social skills. Meals are included in the fees.

Parents who want their children to have special diets not included in the menu may need to bring food in.

Parents must provide formula milk and weaner foods for babies who need them. Other freshly prepared foods will be provided from the Nursery menu.
