Staff car parking permit payment options and rates

The following permit payment options are available:

  • By credit/debit card (generally for non-University staff)
  • By cheque (generally for non-University staff)
  • By monthly deductions from salary

Monthly deductions are changing

In April 2017 the Government made changes to tax rules regarding paying for workplace parking permits by salary sacrifice. This is a national change, which affects employees at universities and other organisations across the UK.

The University implemented the Government’s grace period for those currently paying by salary sacrifice. This grace period is due to end on 31 March 2018 and from 1 April 2018, all payment for parking permits will be made out of your net salary (i.e. your salary after tax) and the salary sacrifice scheme will close.

FAQS:

What does this mean for colleagues who were covered by the grace period?
From 1 April 2018 all payments for parking permits will be made out of your net salary (i.e. your salary after tax) and the salary sacrifice scheme will close.

How much will my payments increase by?
Car parking charges will remain the same (see table below) but as the amount will be deducted from your salary after tax this may mean that you see a reduction in your net pay each month, subject to your personal tax arrangements.

I have joined the car parking permit scheme since April 2017, does this change affect me?
If you joined the car parking scheme from 1 April 2017, you will already be paying from salary deductions after tax as you were not eligible for the Government’s grace period, so there will be no change.
