Work life balance
The following University initiatives can help you to maintain a good work life balance:
- Flexible working
- Maternity and paternity leave
- Sickness absence
- Compassionate leave
- Study leave
- Childcare facilities
- Childcare vouchers
Community challenges
You can also achieve satisfaction in helping the community and having a change from a normal working day - the University allows teams one paid day in a 12 month period to undertake volunteering in the community. This is known as a Community Challenge, you can incorporate it into a team-building exercise as a department. Read the University Web Team's blog post 'Birch Engine Optimisation' about how they enjoyed their Community Challenge day this year. Visit the Community Challenge webpages to find out more.
Definition of work life balance
The Work Foundation defines work life balance as:
having a measure of control over when, where and how you work, leading to being able to enjoy an optimal quality of life. Work life balance is achieved when an individual’s right to a fulfilled life inside and outside paid work is accepted and respected as the norm, to the mutual benefit of the individual, business and society.
