Introduction

The University is not against social drinking but, recognising its responsibility for the welfare of students and employees, the use of alcohol should not have a detrimental effect on safety, attendance and work performance. In some working areas, therefore, alcohol should never be consumed during working hours (see Alcohol and the workplace).

The inappropriate use of alcohol can create health, safety and welfare problems at the workplace as well as reductions in efficiency and detrimental health effects for employees. The University of Exeter is committed to preventing these problems from arising. If, despite the University's attempts at prevention, issues regarding the inappropriate use of alcohol do occur, procedures are in place to deal with them.
