Your rapid action can save lives!Deal with an emergency
Dealing with emergencies is fortunately a rare event, but if you suddenly find yourself having to act then your speed and quick thinking can literally save lives.
As soon as possible after the event send a completed Accident/near miss report form to the Health and Safety Office, Queen's Building, Streatham Campus, Exeter EX4 4QH
Major Emergencies (Fire, serious injury or illness, crime or security issue)
1. Call the Emergency Services directly using a land line or mobile phone
Dial 999 and ask for Fire, Ambulance or Police
Answer the questions, typically:
- Location (University, Building, Road, Postcode)?
- Nature of emergency?
- Are there any casualties, number and extent of injuries?
- Are these and others still exposed to continuing danger?
2. Contact a First Aider (if there are injured)
First Aider lists are available here and in the entrance lobbies to our buildings
Helpful to keep a list of nearest First Aiders prior to the event
3. Contact Security staff
Contact Estate Patrol (Exeter) on 01392 72 3999 or 3999 internally, 24 hours / 7 days
Contact Campus Security (Tremough) on 07768 55 1400 or 1400 internally, (normal hours) or 07768 55 7779 (outside hours)
If you have a mobile phone store these numbers for ease and speed of use.
Security staff have emergency contact details for key members of staff who may be consulted or summoned to attend.
Minor Emergencies (eg those not requiring the Emergency Services)
Minor Injuries: Contact a First Aider (or Security, outside hours)
Property or Grounds defects (eg water leaks, powers cuts, persons trapped in lifts, insecure doors and windows, pot holes and uneven paths, missing safety signage and equipment)
