4.10 Auditing
To comply with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1992) the University has an obligation to audit its health and safety management systems.
(1) Definition
Health and safety auditing is interpreted as:
- measuring performance standards using an appropriate computer-based audit system (this University has selected a system called HaSMaP, designed by the University Safety & Health Association, USHA);
- monitoring performance indicators (eg introduction of safety measures, incident / accident statistics, safety attitudes of staff and students, etc); and
- making an on-site inspection of physical conditions.
(2) Audit practice
Auditing is carried out by members of the Health & Safety Office, on a College by College, Service by Service basis, in a three year rolling programme. Recommendations resulting from the audit exercise will be referred to the College Dean or Head of Service for action, as far as is reasonably practicable. A review of remedial action taken will be carried out within one year from the completion of the audit.
