Browse the list of modules on Streatham and St Lukes' that currently have no pre-/co-requisites and/or accept students from other disciplines. They are divided into areas of interest to help you consider the possible future direction of your degree.

Please note: This list is a non-exhaustive example of some interdisciplinary modules that were available for the 2022/23 academic year and may not be available in 2023/24 and beyond.

Learning for Teaching

The 'Learning for Teaching' modules on Streatham campus are perfect for those considering a career in teaching, or who are just interested in developing their skills in this area.

Teaching English to Speaks of Other Languages (TESOL)

With the approval of their home College, students at the University of Exeter can take a series of optional modules in TESOL at INTO University of Exeter (15 credit module in year 1 and 30 credit modules in year 2 & final year). The course is particularly beneficial to students planning to do a PGCE or pursue a teaching-related career. Whilst most students choose to do TESOL over the three years, it is possible to do any module as a stand-alone option at the appropriate level. It is not essential to have studied TESOL at Level 1 if you would like to study it at Level 2. See the programme website for more information. 

'With proficiency in' opportunities

Certain modules at the Business School are part of 'with proficiency in' (WPI) pathways: WPI Entrepreneurship and WPI Leadership. 

Undergraduate students successfully passing a minimum of 60 credits of modules taken from approved lists in the appropriate programme specifications may have the words ‘with proficiency in Entrepreneurship’ or ‘with proficiency in Leadership’ added to their degree title subject to conditions.

Languages for business

Students studying languages or who have a knowledge of other languages may be interested in the Foreign Language Centre's languages for business modules (Level 3). NOTE: These modules will be delivered in the target language. 

'With proficiency in' Language / Advanced Language 

Undergraduate students successfully passing a minimum of 60 credits of spoken language modules taken in a single foreign language alongside their main degree subject may have the words ‘with proficiency in [named foreign language]’ added to their degree title, subject to conditions. 

Foreign Language Centre (FLC) modules

Have you ever wanted to learn French, Mandarin or British Sign Language? The Foreign Language Centre (FLC) offers modules at four language levels for students interested in learning a language as part of their degree:

Beginners

Intermediate

Advanced

Business

Beginners Fast-Track modules (French, German, Italian and Spanish) are all at University Level 2 and can be taken in the final year of UG study.

Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies modules 

It is also possible to study Persian, Arabic, or Turkish at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies. However, most modules require you to have taken beginner modules in these languages at Level 1. See their module list for more details. 

Classics and Ancient History modules

Greek and Latin modules are available to students who studied these languages at Level 1 or have a GCSE equivalent. See the Classics and Ancient History module list for more details. 

English for Specific Purposes modules

The following modules are available for inbound exchange students in academic year 2022-23:

Level 2:

  • ELC2727 Academic Listening and Speaking
  • ELC2728 Academic Reading and Writing
  • ELC2729 International English: Contexts and Varieties
  • ELC2730 Professional English

Each module is RQF5 and worth 15 credits. There are no prerequisites for any of these modules, and they are suitable for students from all subject areas with an English level from B2 to C2 on the CEFR framework (IELTS 6.5 to 8). Students will be asked to complete a placement test before commencing the module.

As well as studying another language, it is possible to select modules that focus on other cultures, analysing aspects such as history, music and literature. Below is a non-exhaustive list of some of the interdisciplinary culture-based modules offered by departments at Streatham.

It is never too early to think about your career, and you can use modularity to help gain experience in the industry or career you are interested in. As well as business and teaching modules, there are other career or industry-specific modules open to interdisciplinary students.

  • MTHM045 Space Weather and Plasmas MTHMO45 is a 4th year level module that sits in Mathematics, but can be offered to Physics and Natural Sciences undergraduates subject to conditions. Read the module descriptor for more information and on how to contact convenors. 
     

Work experience based modules

Work placements can help you boost your employability.

If you are studying Politics, International Relations, PPE, Sociology, Philosophy, Criminology or Anthropology then you can choose SSI2001: Learning from Work Experience in Social Sciences (Level 2) and SSI3020: Employment Experience (UK and Abroad) (Level 3). Briefings for SSI3020 start in November and you will need to register your interest in taking the module by the end of term 1 in second year.
