Classics and Ancient History Leventis Doctoral Studentship. Ref: 3465
About the award
Through the generosity of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the Department of Classics and Ancient History is delighted to be offering an excellent funding opportunity for exceptional researchers across a range of subjects within the area of Classics and Ancient History:
One Doctoral Studentship (open to UK/EU and International students): this award will provide a significant contribution towards tuition fees and maintenance for three years. The successful candidate may also be asked to contribute up to 150 hours per annum to departmental teaching (including preparation time). The total value of the award and teaching remuneration will be c. £25,000 per annum. These studentships are available to fund research on any aspect of Greek or Roman antiquity.
The Department prides itself on its vigorous research culture, in which postgraduate research students play central roles.
All members of the department have specific research interests and activities, which together cover most aspects of the language, literature, history and material culture of the Greek and Roman worlds. Current major research projects include ancient medicine, Greek impact on non-Greek cultures, ancient migration, Roman connectivity, fragmentary literature and Greek political thought. This award carries no preference for any particular area of classical research, although applicants should address the question of why Exeter is the right institution for their doctoral project.
We invite applications from candidates with a strong academic background and a clear and engaging research proposal which can be developed through available research supervision.
Successful applicants normally have a good first degree (at least 2.1, or international equivalent) in Classics and Ancient History or a related discipline, and have obtained, or are currently working towards, a Masters degree at Merit level, or international equivalent, in Classics and Ancient History or a related discipline. If English is not your native language then you will also need to satisfy our English language entry requirements.
How to apply
To be considered for this doctoral award, you must complete an online web form where you must submit some personal details and upload a full CV, research proposal, transcripts, details of two referees and, if relevant, proof of your English language proficiency, by Tuesday 2nd April.
In addition you must also ensure that your referees email their references to the Postgraduate Administrator at email@example.com by Tuesday 2nd April. Please note that we will not be contacting referees to request references and so you must arrange for them to be submitted to us by the deadline.
References should be submitted by your referees to us directly in the form of a letter. Referees must email their references to us from their institutional email accounts. We cannot accept references from personal/private email accounts, unless it is a scanned document on institutional headed paper and signed by the referee.
Please note that if you have already submitted references to support your application to one of our MPhil/PhD programmes you may re-use these to support your funding application. However, this is not automatic and you must email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to confirm that we have two references on file to support your application, and to request that they be used to support your funding application.
All application documents must be submitted in English. Certified translated copies of academic qualifications must also be provided.
