About the award

What is available? Three x 50% tuition fee scholarships

Duration 3.0 years

For tuition fee scholarships, a maximum of 50% discount is available on International tuition fees. Where a discount on tuition fees has already been agreed with the University of Exeter via a government sponsor or other funding scheme agreement for 2020 entry, an additional Global Excellence Scholarship will be applied up to a maximum of 50% discount in total.

Scholarships are available in the following subject areas within the College of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Exeter, and at all campuses:

Awards will be granted to the strongest applicants based on an assessment of the applicant’s:

  • Academic excellence
  • Research potential
  • Research proposal

Entry requirements

Successful applicants should normally have a good first degree (at least 2.1, or international equivalent) in a relevant field of study.

Applicants will be expected to have identified and approached a potential supervisor and to have supervision agreed in principle. To help find an appropriate supervisor please use the Research Expertise search function on our Postgraduate Research website.

  • Applicants would be expected to start their studies in September 2020. Students/applicants who have already commenced PhD study, or who hold a deferred offer, or who wish to apply for deferred entry are not eligible for this award.
  • Recipients are expected to commit to engagement beyond their doctoral studies through contributing to the research environment of their discipline and the College, by participating in research activities, accessing skills development training and opportunities, and career development. Continued funding would be dependent on satisfactory evidence of this engagement having taken place.

This award is only open to applicants whose fee status is classed as International. Therefore this award is not open to Home or EU students. Click here for further information about fee status.

How to apply

Applicants must fulfil the standard entry requirements for their programme of study. Details of these can be found on the Postgraduate Research website.

Applicants will be required to include the following with their online application:

  • A Letter of Application,
  • CV
  • Research Proposal with a supervisor agreed in principle
  • Transcripts
  • Two References
  • IELTS or equivalent (if from a non-English speaking country)

Reference information
You will be asked to name two referees as part of the application process.  It is your responsibility to ensure that your two referees email their references to, as we will not make requests for references directly; you must arrange for them to be submitted by 2 March 2020.

If you are unable to upload your references, then they should be submitted to us directly in the form of a letter. Referees must email their references to us from their institutional email accounts. We cannot accept references from personal/private email accounts, unless it is a scanned document on institutional headed paper and signed by the referee.

Interviews are likely to be held w/c 27 April 2020

All application documents must be submitted in English. Certified translated copies of academic qualifications must also be provided.

Awardees will be required to satisfy any conditions stipulated in their offer letter no later than 31 August 2020
