Innovation Centre - the first BREEAM Excellent Building in Exeter.Sustainable construction and refurbishment
The University is in the midst of a £275 million investment programme on the Streatham Campus. It is therefore important that we consider the environmental sustainability of the construction and refurbishment activities as well as ensure that we minimise carbon dioxide emissions and resource use over the lifetime of the developments.
We use the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) as a tool for delivering sustainable buildings. All of our new developments will achieve BREEAM Excellent, with the Environmental Sustainability Institute in Cornwall on target to achieve BREEAM Outstanding
For refurbishments we have developed Sustainable Refurbishment Guides and Guidelines for designers on building service requirements for construction projects, with particular reference to low energy design solutions and appropriate levels for comfort conditions.
