How can I become a confident cyclist?
Free cycle training is now available to all University staff and students. Training is provided by a fully Qualified National Standard Cycle Instructor. Whether it is getting on a bike for the first time or tackling particularly tricky sections of a journey, the training is tailor made to your needs and suitable for all levels of cyclist.
Where can I get a bike?
Exeter has many quality bike shops, where you can buy new and second hand bikes. They also sell all the cycle accessories you will need. Essential accessories include a helmet, a bell, cycle lights, reflective jacket or tabard, and a bike lock (D lock is recommended). It’s against the law not to use a light when it’s dark!
Staff can benefit from Cyclescheme, which saves the employee income tax and national insurance on the cost of the cycle, and spreads the cost over 12 months.
St. Luke’s staff can use a free University pool bike to travel to meetings or to pop out for lunch.
How do I find my way around by bike?
Exeter and the University are well served with traffic-free cycle routes. Plan your journey on the web or using a smart phone app.
Where can I park my bike? Where can I find a shower?
Use the campus map or Layar to find cycle parking and shower facilities on campus. Please make sure you always use designated cycle parking facilities and don’t tie your bike to railings or trees.
How can I be safe while cycling?
Be visible! If it’s dark use a light! You can buy your lights at a cycle shop or from any of the campuses’ Premier shops.
Keep safe and obey the law, follow the Highway Code! For example, don’t cycle the wrong way down one way streets.
How can I keep my bike safe?
Get a decent bike lock from a cycle shop or get a low cost D lock (£14.34) from the University’s Travel Plan Coordinator.
There are locked cycle shelter facilities are Streatham Sports Park (code available from reception), St. Luke’s Club Alley (code available from the Resident and Retail Office, South Cloisters) and University Accommodation.
Hall residents must have their cycle registered and tagged. Registration may prevent impoundment, and aids in the recovery of lost or stolen bicycles.

How can I claim cycle mileage for cycling to University business engagements?
Staff who cycle their own bicycle in the course of their work can claim a cycle mileage rate of 20p per mile.
